Key trends and insights from Kelley Robson, co-founder of Pivto Digital Learning

Adapting to distributed teams, leveraging the talent in your organization, and delivering training in a manner your colleagues will actually enjoy and consume is no easy task. But a well trained and engaged workforce can pay dividends for your organization. How do you put your organization at the leading edge of learning?

More to the point: how do you leverage course authoring tools, like Articulate, and video creation platforms, like Powtoon, to create and deliver effective content no matter where your colleagues sit? Powtoon’s head of customer success, Daniel Nathan, sat down with Pivto Co-Founder, Kelley Robson to get an insider perspective on eLearning in 2022.

Kelley’s Background in Instructional Design

Daniel Nathan: Hi Kelly, Thank you so much for joining me. Give us a little bit of background as to your experience within instructional design.

Kelley Robson: I have about 20 years experience building and leading organizations. My training and development background included working for organizations like Siemens, GSK, and Baxter Healthcare.

One of my goals is to help my clients use digital media to make eLearning more impactful and, more importantly, drive your business needs. My team of instructional designers at Pivto are experts at creating eLearning that reflects the culture of organizations, which I think is super important.

We use a variety of tools to achieve those goals, and some of my favorite tools include:

  • Articulate Storyline
  • Adobe Premiere Pro
  • 7Taps — a newer tool we’ve been using for micro learning
  • Storyblocks — which integrates with Powtoon, and is great for stock video, music, and photos
  • And of course, Powtoon

Why Video Is So Powerful for Learning

DN: Can you elaborate on why video is being harnessed as a medium for learning within companies?

KR: Video is a key component of developing a corporate culture for remote workforces. As we move into 2022, organizations are realizing that their employees are happier, and healthier too, working from home, saving on commute times, etc.

For the most part, we’ve accepted that getting everyone back in the office may not happen anytime soon, and people are going to remain remote. That’s going to be a long-term, permanent change to how we work.

In 2021, I think management was focused on having the right procedures and tools in place so they retained productivity. The big shift in 2022 is now we’re going to be a permanently fully-remote, or partially-remote organization. Given that, how can we develop a strong remote work culture? I think video is key.

Video is one of the strongest ways to engage, and is so much more impactful than a lot of the other techniques that I see out there. Whether it’s getting on zoom calls or sharing PowerPoint presentations, video is just really impactful.

Keep in mind that the brain processes video 60,000 times faster than text which is just truly amazing. And in 2021, 80% of all Internet traffic was video. That kind of engagement is important from a standpoint of building culture remotely. Video builds that trust.

So this is why at Pivto, we always add video to the courses we recreate, whether we’re doing it in storyline or stand-alone, because it’s the best way to build connections between the content instructors and learners.

Articulate storylines are great, but we’ve all gone through training that was mandatory, and it was really just an interactive PowerPoint where you click through it as fast as you can, check the box, and say, “I’ve done the training.”

We need to do better than that, and we can do better than that. Not only is video a key component to that effort, but it also allows your team to have a point of view, a bit of levity, and to make learning fun for people, rather than just a chore and something to get through. People just have come to expect video based content, and if you see just text-based training, it’s just not going to be engaging, and it’s not what people expect from world class organizations.

Emerging eLearning Trends in 2022

DN: Looking ahead into 2022, what are the best strategies that you’re seeing for eLearning? What kind of trends are you expecting to see?

KR: Well, I think the biggest trend that we’re seeing is what people have settled on calling The Great Resignation. Companies are asking themselves, “Now that this is happening, how can we attract and retain top talent?”

It’s clear that employees have changed their priorities. They want to work for companies that have a compelling business objective. But they also want to work in places that have strong social and environmental responsibility. They want to be shown that the companies that they’re working for have a commitment to take care of their mental and physical health. And they want to make sure that wherever they work is offering flexible work-from-home options.

According to recent research from Gartner, organizations spend on average, $2,500 per employee, per year on employee experience. And this is only expected to increase.

So your learning needs to reflect the culture of your organization, be fun and rewarding for employees to engage with, and most importantly, it needs to be available anytime, anywhere, from any device. Employees don’t want to have to get on a conference call at a specific time; they want to be able to engage with eLearning when they have time to fit it in their schedule, in small amounts of learning at a time, to help with retention.

2022’s eLearning Tech Stack

DN: You alluded earlier to the additional eLearning tools that you’re using. You named a few such as Articulate. How are you leveraging video with those tools to deliver your eLearning content?

KR: Sure. Firstly, Articulate makes it really easy to incorporate videos created with Powtoon. Really any MP4 file can be added into Articulate Storyline as a video block. You just add that in a drop down menu.

And you can make all those videos interactive as well. For instance, Articulate allows us to present learners a button that pops up over the video, where you can show hidden layers of content within. It’s really taking video to the next step, making it fully interactive for the learner.

Leveraging Video Throughout Your eLearning Strategy

DN: How do Learning & Development leaders leverage their video creation tools throughout their entire eLearning strategy?

KR: It’s important to start with the fact that learners are expecting eLearning to be like any other media that they consume. As a huge range of new design, animation and video tools become available on the market, such as Powtoon and Articulate, eLearning needs to be improved as well.

While the stories we tell in eLearning remain very important, people’s expectations of the quality and visual experience of the eLearning they consume are growing. They expect higher-quality content and higher content value, and Powtoon really makes that easy to deliver.

We can help build templates for our clients within Powtoon. We can help them build out the videos but then, instead of having to bring in a video expert or animation team when things change in their organizations — when titles change, when. structure changes, when their processes change, etc. — they can go in and make a quick edit to the Powtoons that we’ve created for them and have updated videos up and running in no time, instead of weeks or months.

That’s one of the most exciting things about Powtoon and some of these other tools: you can quickly, as an HR department or L&D specialist, create new videos weekly — not annually. Where it used to be you’d have one big eLearning module that you create once a year, now you can make smaller videos quickly, as needed, and at scale. That way your employees stay current and up to date with announcements, training, new software, or whatever you might be teaching them.

And as we discussed, learning on mobile devices is in demand in a way it hasn’t been previously. People are sharing their devices, working at home, perhaps on multiple devices,  and they’re looking for tasks that they can complete in a more entertaining setting. Part of this phenomenon is driven by the fact that they’re consuming other content on those same devices, via YouTube, Netflix, or social media feeds, and they want to have a similar, more entertaining experience with their eLearning.

Value for Learners & Instructional Designers

DN: Could you elaborate further and tell us some of the additional value that you get from Powtoon’s video creation platform as an instructional designer.

KR: Good question. A lot of our clients have Powtoon licenses and they initially engaged with it because they were familiar with the animation capabilities and the character builder. The ability to craft your own characters is absolutely incredible because you can take the characters and make sure they’re on-brand. You can have them reflect a diverse workforce. And you really have no limit to the variations on the characters that you can create. It’s really cool to put those characters in the whiteboard or the infographic animation styles which have been core to Powtoon for years.

But I really also like the screen capture functionality that was recently added to Powtoon, because it’s just a great way to:

  • Demonstrate software changes in an organization
  • Produce step-by-step walkthroughs
  • Hear directly from company leadership
  • Greet new people, and celebrate success

Ultimately, the ability to create and edit video content quickly is also a key benefit. The video templates within Powtoon are just absolutely unbelievable. The collection is extensive, and new templates are always being updated. Anyone on the team can customize them to look like a completely original animation project — but they’re built on the power team templates.

DN: Kelley Robson, co-founder of Pivto Digital Learning, thank you so much for your time.

KR: Thanks Daniel, I appreciate it.

Video Transcript:

First things first, ladies and gentlemen, this year, Black Friday falls on Friday, November 26th, 2021. Black Friday is notorious for massive deals and throngs of people ready to buy. So how do you ride this tidal wave of consumer activity even if you’re a beginner? The answer is simple. Video ads. I’m Nick from Powtoon and today we’re going to learn how to make a Black Friday video ad in three quick steps. We don’t have a second to waste, please like this video, subscribe for more and let’s dive right in.

The first step is to capture attention. Remember, you’re fighting cute cat videos and people‘s crazy uncles on social media feeds. So if you want to stand out, you got to choose a video format that captures attention. Come with me here to our templates. I click templates. I’m going to filter for marketing videos, and I’m going to choose video ads. The format is simple. You use engaging, attention-grabbing stock footage, a clip, and then there’s room for a message. We’ll talk more about that in step two. If you’re not finding what you’re looking for, that’s okay, because in any one of these templates you can swap out that stock footage to any other clip you want. Let’s take a look at this one here.

So this could definitely work. This could definitely work. You know what? I’m just going to go ahead and choose to edit this template and that will launch it back to the studio.

Once you’ve got their attention, then you need to make a connection and you do that with the message of your video. Here’s a line of text for the setup. In the next slide, we see the punchline if you will, and with this sort of video, you’re not necessarily talking directly about your product. We’re really here to bring attention to your Black Friday deal. So let’s go ahead and edit the text. Oops. So awesome. Right? A Black Friday deal so awesome. And with this, just to see how this comes in, right? There’s that box and then the join thing comes down under it.

So what I actually want to do is arrange this a little differently. I don’t need this text anymore. This text I’m going to update to, they’ll throw you a and we’ll just adjust the size, and we can also adjust the size of the box behind it. And I just want to take this text and a flash mob. Okay. Obviously, it just needs to readjust the size of this text box. Flash mob. And also I want to be sure the box that goes over it is here.

And the other thing we want to do is take this guy along with its box, just move it right here. They’ll throw you a flash mob. Okay? So this way, we’ve got our hook. We’ve got a video, right? Here’s a crazy bunch of people dancing in unison in the street. It’s perhaps somewhere in Asia, right? It’s definitely not your normal video that you’re seeing going through the scroll. And this has the opportunity to stop someone, capture their attention. A Black Friday deal is so awesome. So awesome, what? A Black Friday deal so awesome they’ll throw you a flash mob, right? It’s just fun. It makes that connection. It ties up the text of your message with the video that people are seeing, right? And it’s just a wonderful way to get into people‘s hearts a little bit and to get a little more attention than that next ad. So one last step.

Before you finish your video, it’s super important to share that offer, right? You’ve taken the time to get on people‘s radar and you’ve won their hearts, right? With a connection, you made with your text, with your little joke. Now, they’re ready. You want to tell them exactly what to do. Show this offer here, right here. Let’s actually change this to 50% off. Am I nuts? No, I’m not nuts because 50% off is exactly the kind of deal people are ready for on Black Friday. If there’s ever a time to give your biggest, steepest, most generous discount of the year, Black Friday is that time. 50% off. And you know what? I’m just going to make this even bigger, even bigger. Why not? Even bigger than this. Let’s go all the way to 100, 101. Why not?

And we’ll just make this a little bit bigger. You know what? We’re going to have to make this whole thing a little bit bigger, but that’s okay. Just like that. And we can move this. Every … Oops. Every plan is now 50% off, right? Update your website. You can also insert your logo. This is super important, especially at the end. You want to connect those good feelings with your brand and with this deal. So be sure to insert your logo, just double click and you can upload an image.

Nick’s Guitars. Boom. And there’s my logo. I’m just going to crop it a little so it’s a little bit clearer. And there we go. Go and update the website. Oops. Nicksguitars.com. [inaudible 00:06:20] Why we make this now, every guitar is now 50% off. Boom. Beautiful. I think we’re ready to preview what we’ve got. Let’s preview.

See, you’ve got exactly what you need. A quirky, fun video that grabs attention. A message there that makes a connection, right? Shows a bit of your sense of humor and really draws attention to your Black Friday deal and finally bringing it home, offering that deal. It’s a big deal. Nick’s guitars, any guitar, 50% off. Come get it now, Black Friday madness. You’re going to love it. I think we’re ready to export. You’ve got all these wonderful export options up here. And especially when we’re talking about ads, right? You can actually export directly to the Facebook ads manager if you’re advertising on Facebook or Instagram. Upload directly to YouTube for ads you’re going to be running on YouTube or you can download an MP4 so you can put that on any platform you like. We’ll just go ahead and make a Powtoon player page. We’re going to do the full quality and remove that Powtoon watermark. And we’ve got our video.

See how easy it is? Black Friday isn’t just for those big-box behemoths out there. It’s within reach for anyone who can capture attention, make a connection and share an irresistible Black Friday deal. And the beauty of making your own video ad is that you can tweak, update, iterate, and make more video ads for Cyber Monday, the holidays and beyond. And no matter what you need to communicate in this world, just remember to communicate visually with Powtoons visual communication platform.

Using graphics and static designs in an explainer video adds a new layer of originality to your visual content communication. In the history of visual communication, 2020 was a crucial year. And the changes ahead for businesses and educators may be even greater. And that is the only prediction you will find in this article.

If 2020 taught us anything, it’s that the whole world can change in an instant. Rather than making bold, but likely wrong, predictions for 2021, let us instead analyze what exactly happened this year, and what lessons we learned about how to have a better communication experience.

We will track the problems the COVID-19 pandemic exposed in businesses and institutions around the world, and follow the crisis as it unfolded in our conversations with professionals on the ground across industries.

We’ll talk about the new technology Powtoon developed this year, and the emergence of the Visual Communication Platform. Finally, we’ll run through concrete examples for how to use visual communication in 2021 to ensure your strategy is aligned, your teams are connected, and your business not only survives, but thrives in our new visual reality.

2020’s Communication Problems

In many ways, the changes we all experienced in our working lives have been a long time coming. The COVID-19 pandemic only sped up the timetable for digital transformation, remote work and learning, and a more visual way to communicate in our noisy digital environment. But it wasn’t an easy transition, and most of us recognized some serious problems:

  • Overnight shift to remote work
  • Drastic need for digitized content
  • Increase in demand for training and upskilling
  • Time-consuming and exhausting video calls
  • Disengaged employees & misaligned teams
  • Creating a digital company culture
  • Digital chaos from too many channels, distractions, and notifications

That’s not to mention the challenge of work-life balance, or keeping your kids engaged with their remote learning.

Experts Weigh In on Visual Communication Throughout 2020

We saw these challenges play out throughout the year in the conversations we had with customers, experts, and the people on the ground dealing with the crisis.

Powtoon, Kaltura, Accenture: The outlook in March 2020

In March, as cities and businesses were going under lockdown across Europe, the U.S. and beyond, we held a webinar with guests from Accenture and Kaltura to talk about the implications for video and visual communication across industries and across the globe.

The over 400% increase in traffic in areas under lockdown, the feedback from various industries through the lens of Accenture’s consulting work, and the massive value companies and educational institutions were ALREADY SEEING from video and visual communication are just a few of the highlights. This conversation can’t be missed.

Using video for learning & development: April 2020

Early on, users reported a massive need to get L&D content ready for remote work.

So we welcomed learning technologies expert, longtime L&D consultant, and host of The Learning Hack Podcast, John Helmer, to discuss how to use video for L&D and remote work in the age of Coronavirus.

We covered the biggest challenges facing L&D pros today, the role video and visual communication can play in supporting your team remotely, and more.

Employee attitudes & returning to office (or not): Visual Communication & HR

So what impact was all this having on employees? How were employers communicating visually, and what were the prospects for returning to the office anytime soon? To answer those questions, we welcomed Zoe Haimovitch, VP of content experience for the online HR platform, Hibob.

We discussed the latest insights into attitudes toward remote work & returning to the office. Zoe shared her expert analysis on what these trends mean for the emerging post-COVID reality. And we got into the details of how video & visual communications help your company come back strong.

Building visual communication skills during the crisis

Throughout the crisis, we also tried to make it easy to pick up and build the skills it takes to communicate visually. Understanding how to form your message, how to use your VCP’s  capabilities to the fullest, all at the side of our video experts — Powtoon staff and customers alike!

2020 Technological Innovations — From Workspace to VCP

These conversations went hand-in-hand with ones we were having with you, the Powtoon user, behind the scenes. And springing from those conversations came several innovations on the Powtoon platform in 2020.

The Powtoon Workspace

New capabilities sometimes require a new home base. We began laying the groundwork for the innovations of 2020 right in January, with the initial release of the new Powtoon Workspace.

https://powtoon.wistia.com/medias/1j9h6tsvz0
An introduction to the Powtoon Workspace

Since then the workspace has grown to include direct links to tutorials and other resources, new ways to create videos, and new powerful tools to organize your work.

New characters, poses, templates, scenes, props, and more!

It’s a new world!

And that world calls for new content

The items inside your videos are what do the heavy lifting of visual communication. And to effectively communicate about remote work, health and wellness, COVID-19 safety and procedures, and our new lockdown reality, we released new character poses, new templates and scenes, sets of props and shapes, and our remote work and remote learning guides filled with resources to help you succeed.

In-house diversity & inclusion and brand identity? Meet Powtoon’s Character Builder

Powerful characters tell a more powerful story. Whether you want to ensure your videos are 100% unique, or whether you want to communicate your organization’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, the characters that tell our visual story need to resonate with our audiences.

That’s why we released Powtoon’s character builder. This leap forward came with three new character families. Edit them a little by customizing clothes, or get into the details to define gender, hair, facial features, and more.

Finally, building a character can also help solidify your organization’s brand identity. Simply uploading your logo allows you to create characters who tell your story while reinforcing your brand standards.

Powtoon Capture for easy screen recording & video messaging

One thing almost everyone we spoke with shared was the struggle to replace in-person interactions. Miscommunication seems to creep up left and right. That personal, face-to-face interaction is incredibly difficult to replace, and in many ways can never fully be matched.

But the ability to quickly, easily capture your ideas, create a walk-through, give feedback on projects, or simply share a shout out with your team makes the transition to remote and hybrid work easily, with that personal touch.

Powtoon Capture is a Chrome plugin, and allows you to record your screen, camera, or both. And once completed, your capture video lives in your Powtoon workspace for easy access and sharing.

The Visual Communication Platform

All of this work, all these new capabilities, and the roadmap for the year ahead made it clear that businesses need something more than a simple video maker. What we are building together is truly a platform to support all company communications. In other words, a Visual Communication Platform that helps your organization create, mange, distribute, and track visual communication across the company.

Video call anxiety is real. Forget the fact that remote work today means finding the most presentable corner of our living quarters, donning our most “business on the top” piece of office wear, and perfecting our homely lighting and sound systems.

With the new and necessary wave of remote work comes the need for back-to-back-to-back video calls, at times for hours a day, is exhausting. With every new meeting invite notification, the impact of “let’s just have a video call” is starting to wear us all down on every level.

Not to single Zoom out, but since December 2019, Zoom’s daily meeting participants have soared from about 10 million users to 300 million meeting participants today. Between January and March, app usage jumped over 67 percent, and the company has seen unprecedented success during a time when other businesses are struggling.

As the world has pivoted to remote work, there is a dire need for communication between management teams, colleagues, and just about everyone else.

Video calls have quickly become the go-to communication channel, yet the proof is in the productivity —  and video calls are having a negative impact on workspaces around the world.

See Visual Communications in action! Request a demo.

Why Is Meeting Fatigue a Thing?

Even when the 9-5 office world dominated, meetings were always tedious time killers. For many, meetings had become an essential non-essential — a space to call team gatherings together, yet often were conducted with little focus, wasting time and energy of everyone involved.

Today, in the new world of remote everything, meetings are no different. Except instead of meeting in the conference room, attendees meet at links, filling up displays instead of seats, and experiencing a whole new reality of behind-the-screen symptoms stemming from The Video Call

Relying so heavily on The Video Call, however, seems to result in decreased productivity and enjoyment, and an increase in stress, worry, and exhaustion

A number of factors might contribute to these symptoms. Yet it seems as if The Video Call is slowly and surely zooming straight to becoming the nemesis of… nearly everyone on the team.

Are Video Calls THAT Bad?

Besides the unavoidable intrusion of personal space, the need for video calls are creating damaging and unmanageable expectations for remote employees.

WHY?

Every video call requires the need to be ON.

On screen, on camera, on best behavior, on display —  and sometimes all of that ON can be exhausting. While employees only needed to be “on” in the office, they now need to be on at any moment, from their house, causing dissonance between personal and professional identities.

When people need to stare at themselves, their self esteem seems to drop.

Most humans would never opt for taking the stage, or the screen. Some faces are simply not meant for performance. But about 300 millions faces a day are showing up on video calls, and many of them are likely suffering from some kind of performance anxiety

For work video calls, many employees likely feel obligated to show their face, to feel present and seen, and to ensure their boss feels it too.

A second of silence is too much.

Talk about anxiety. A 2014 study showed that with just 1.2 seconds of silence between people on technology can create a negative impression of the other person, or cause immediate anxiety due to tech failure.

This one second of silence could have nothing to do with you or the person you’re communicating with — and everything to do with your WIFI connection. Yet it still has a direct impact on people’s personal connection.

While in face-to-face conversations, silence can make space for careful thought, or a moment of non-verbal connection the situation when communicating via video calls is totally different. The need to speak between the gaps online, and the awkward interactions it promotes, is giving humans less leeway in their response time, forcing them to literally speak before they think.

Too much Zoom means zoning out.

If you’re like every employee in the world, you’ve received what feels like 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, even a million video call invites per day. Having back-to-back video calls is not only dangerous to our physical health, but also to our mental and emotional well-being. No breaks and no downtime make for weak minds, less productivity, less creativity, more stress and more anxiety.

The human brain requires way more focus for a video call.

Since the demands on our attention are greater than ever, face-to-face meetings make it easier to put distractions aside and have a conversation eye-to-eye. When it comes to video calls, it takes more of conscious effort to concentrate and balance whatever is happening behind the screens, which could be filled with partners, pets, children, doorbells, deliveries, and tons of other distractions.

To add a few more challenges, throw in blue light drama, screen dizziness, AND technical difficulties  — WILL REMOTE WORK EVER CUT US A BREAK!?

What Do We Do Now?

Clearly we are being negatively affected by The Video Call’s dizzying deficiencies… and this emerging issue is begging for a serious solution.

So here’s our proposal.

What if video calls became weekly essentials instead of daily ones?

What if there was another way to communicate important messages, company goals, tools, and tasks?

What if instead of One. More. Video. Call, you received the information you needed in a one- to two-minute, easily accessible video?

No calls, no confusion, all clarity  — YES PLEASE!

In a working world living on the edges of meeting fatigue, the way we meet matters. How we communicate with each other is on par with how we deliver messages, updates, and goals within, before, during, and after meetings.

The game changer is to evolve and elevate our idea of visual communications beyond just a The Video Call

Visual communications means how we craft messages before, during, and after meetings. Truly communicating visually is about connecting to keep our teams on point, to keep our colleagues updated, and to get our messages across quickly and clearly —  without needing to spend an hour suffering on the screen.

A true visual communication platform allows remote teams to easily create videos and presentations that enhance communication, inside and outside the organization.

Video calls are on the way out  — and visual communication is on the way in.

If teams can become more productive, and more creative, I can’t say stress will simply disappear, but meeting fatigue WILL.

With this new world of work, we are dedicated to redefining the future. Sometimes, we just need to zoom out (and possibly limit how much we Zoom back in) to see the big picture.

Working remotely because of COVID-19, or Coronavirus, is now a global phenomenon. Every day we see more stories about mandatory lockdowns, quarantines, universities and schools closing their doors, and businesses shifting to remote work.

For millions of professionals around the world, they will be working remotely for the very first time. Without the familiar routines of office life, it’s easy to disappear into the background, and to lose the visibility you depend on to work effectively with your colleagues.

Does that describe you? Or perhaps you’ve been working remotely for a while, and are trying to achieve the same success you could in person. No matter what the reason for your remote work, there is a not-so-secret weapon you can use to ensure you stay connected to your teammates and in visual communication with your manager.

Here are the ten best video templates for staying productive and connected to your team while working remotely…

Working Remotely: Video Templates for Keeping Projects On Track

The first and most important area to address when shifting to remote working is to keep your specific projects on track. Where working in person allows impromptu conversations and adjustments as you go, your communication needs to be much more intentional when you’re not in the same physical location.

From planning your project kickoff, setting project goals, and following up on crucial meetings, to sharing your results along the way, no remote worker should be without these video templates.

Working Remotely: Video Templates for Engaging and Regular Updates

Checking in with your manager is something that happens organically in an office. You say hello in the morning, and very naturally follow up with how things are going. But when you’re working remotely, you need to OVER COMMUNICATE in order to reach the same levels of visibility.

The following video templates are creative and engaging ways to share important and timely updates with your manager, your team, or your entire company…

Working Remotely: Video Templates for Peer Learning & Innovation

Another challenge remote workers struggle with is isolation. Not just the social isolation one can feel without the hustle and bustle of the office, but also the professional isolation that can accompany physical distance.

But just because you aren’t in the same location doesn’t mean you can’t collaborate and connect with your teammates. You simply need to proactively communicate. And the best way to do that is visually.

Use these video templates to create peer learning videos to share your expertise across the team and keep your colleagues up to date with the latest best practices in your field.

In this day and age, we’re all looking for a way to be more productive at work. Everyone needs a way to boost their impact, from HR, to L&D, Sales, Internal Communication, and beyond. The fact is video captures attention, makes a deeper impact, and drives behaviors better than other kinds of content. So what happens when a business that fully embraces video and visual communication?

Today, I want to tell you the story of Megan, Eric, Robert, and Lauren. Each of them uses video in a different way, but together, adopting visual communications helps them all be more productive and get better results.

Being More Productive With Video: The Story of Megan, Eric, & Robert

To see exactly what I’m talking about (and how easily you can start implementing visual communications within your role and across your company), watch this:

Megan in HR needs to recruit top talent. Eric in L&D dreams of developing the leaders of tomorrow. Robert needs to report on the sales team’s results to ensure the revenue his company needs is in the pipeline.

We can see that each employee has a different task, and each is able to accomplish their goals more successfully with video. Let’s take a look at each of our characters, and the types of videos that helped them achieve more.

Attracting & Recruiting Top Talent: Megan in HR

Attracting and recruiting the most talented hires is one of HR’s biggest responsibilities. Not only do you need your job listings to stand out, but certain professions are in such high demand, you need your company to stand out and be attractive from the start. Simply relying on job posting boards and a well-written description is no longer enough!

In addition, creating a video about open positions, employee experience, company mission and vision, and more can tell your company’s story, and help establish expectations for company culture for new hires. The better their experience matches their expectations, the more engaged and satisfied your new hires will be.

HR Video Templates for Recruitment & Onboarding to Use Right Now

Never fear, Powtoon always has your back. And we have tons of video templates created especially for HR professionals to not only recruit the best new hires, but to get them started on the right foot with new employee onboarding. Developing the Leaders of Tomorrow: Eric in L&D

Learning & Development is maturing, and becoming an integrated experience for employees. The days when it was enough to push ecourses on your employees from a cold, gray LMS are quickly waning. These days, the LXP, learning experience platform, is making it possible for employees to learn and develop their skills in a way that fits their daily working routine.

That’s why companies like Skyguide are using Powtoon to transform their L&D efforts across the organization. But whether you’re using an LMS, an LXP, company intranet, or just emailing your employees, you’d better have something valuable to send them.

L&D content must be three things to you achieve your learning goals:

Visual — Capture attention immediately, and show (don’t tell) employees exactly what they need to know.

Modular & accessible — Employees should be able to access the exact training they need, when the information is directly relevant to their work.

Personalized & valuable — The technology exists today to easily personalize training content.

Visual, modular, and personlized L&D content makes a deeper impact. Not only can employees quickly identify the importance this training holds for them, it’s an easy way to emphasize the value an employee should expect to receive from their training. Even something as simple as an invitation to training should identify the value of the session. Employees should have a clear expectation of what they look forward to if they attend.

From developing a company culture that is accepting and inclusive, training up colleagues on the latest procedures and best-practices, introducing new essential tools, or simply inviting your colleagues to your next training session, these templates will get you started right away. The faster you start using video to develop your team, the sooner you’ll start reaping the benefit of having the most talented and well trained leaders in your industry.

Using Video to Add Value to Sales: Robert & the Sales Team

The reality for most sales teams up until now has been an unending stack of spreadsheets. This wastes precious time your salespeople and managers could be devoting to closing new deals and filling up the pipeline.

In addition to meeting their own goals, a sales team must be moving the company toward its goals as well. But while most sales pros would like to be more data-centric, the time involved in managing, interpreting, and reporting data is too big an ask.

The same is true from Robert and his team. But imagine if he could create visual reports, with easy to use, ready-made video templates…

What Visual Communication Across Your Company Looks Like

These are just three examples of how different departments can use video to be more productive and effective in their roles. But there’s one more person’s story to tell, and that’s Lauren.

Lauren is the new hire that Megan recruited. Lauren steps into a company that has fully embraced visual communication throughout their company and processes. The job posting she sees is video. Her onboarding is video. Her personalized leadership development training is video, too. And she will also be expected to communicate visually, just like the sales team and every other team.

This kind of company, with the help of a robust Visual Communication Platform like Powtoon Business, goes one step further than cranking out training videos. A company that is committed to communicating visually across every team can see company culture improve.

It’s as true for setting business goals as it is for achieving anything: start by setting out a clear vision. The fact is, people are 1.4 times as likely to achieve a goal they’ve already visualized.

Not only that, but clearly defining your company’s new year’s business goals can stop obstacles to your company’s success in their tracks. Some of the most common goal-stoppers for businesses include:

  • Changing strategy
  • Unclear decision-making process
  • Lack of resources
  • Ill-defined goals
  • Miscommunication around priority

That’s the WHY, but we’re here to cover the HOW!

Let’s take a look at a handy template we created to present your company’s annual goals, visually…

Business Goals Video Template In Action

We have to start this section with a classic “before & after” setup. Here’s the unmodified video template, right from Powtoon’s template gallery:

BEFORE (click here to edit this template right now!)

And here is what a fully modified Powtoon template looks like. For this, I invented one of the fastest growing industrial nightlight companies on Earth: Nick’s Nightlights…

AFTER

These templates are designed by our in-house creative team, and draw on the experiences of over 27 million Powtoon users in almost every professional field to make your message as simple and engaging as it can be. Let’s take a look at the annual goals I put together for my fictional company, and the most essential elements of the video template to customize.

Essential Elements to Customize

You’ll notice I have not changed the structure of this video. The script is solid, and allows me to establish Nick’s Nightlights’ company-wide goals for 2020. But I did change some essential elements in this video:

Branding

I included the logo and brand colors for Nick’s Nightlights. I’m using a very simple black & white theme, with the logo made of a tilted nightlight icon, and the name of the company in company font.

This logo and color scheme continue throughout the video. I also swapped out the template’s backgrounds for video backgrounds that best fit the theme and feel of the topics at hand (more on that in the next section!)

Even though this isn’t a marketing piece for public consumption, sticking to brand standards internally makes your brand stronger — inside and out — and gives your videos a professional look and feel.

Concise text

Every detail can’t make it into a video, and that’s ok! Your employees wouldn’t remember every detail anyway. The most important thing for a video like this is to provide the most important overview that can tell the story of your company’s success in the year to come. Customizing the text itself is simple and intuitive (again, I cover more below). Just remember to keep it brief.

Clear CTA

A call to action, or CTA, is a marketing term, but it applies to any and every piece of communication you share. Never, never, never rely on chance or goodwill for your audience to take action. Tell them exactly what to do.

As you can see, in this video, I encourage Nick’s Nightlight employees to meet with their manager to make these goals a part of their own annual plan. Now these goals have actionable context for every employee, at every level. That’s how you start to bridge the gap between setting goals and actually achieving them.

How to Customize Your Business Goals Video

Here’s a quick “step-by-step” to show you everything I did to customize an optimized Powtoon template for my annual goals video.

Step 1: Choose a template

This is really about saving time and getting inspiration. Sometimes getting started is the hardest part, but these templates have already done most of the work. I browsed around the Company Guidelines category of templates and decided to modify the Annual Planning template:

creating a business goals video starts with choosing a template this image shows the Powtoon video template library

Step 2: Branding

Customize text, colors, & add your logo

Your brand is your company’s identity. Usually, this means defining a specific color palate, fonts, and an icon or logo that represents your brand. In this case, I created a logo for Nick’s Nightlights using Powtoon’s built-in assets. I simply combined the lightbulb icon (rotated slightly) with black text in “Urban” font.

Selecting the elements and using keyboard commands to copy and paste it on additional slides is very easy, and allows you to brand your video with your own watermark. If you already have an image file of your logo, you’re in luck! Simply upload your file, and you’ll always have it in your media library.

hhow to upload an image in the Powtoon platform to upload your logo and customize the branding of your business goals video

Customizing text in Powtoon is super intuitive. Simply select any text box and start typing to modify text. But especially important is to match your brand colors.

Nick’s Nightlights is a minimalist company, and our colors are simply White and Black. You can find those colors pre-loaded in our color menu. But you can also define the color by its hex code, use the color sampler, or color wheel to create the exact right hue. Then save to “My Colors” for easy, one-click access.

Customize colors easily. shows how to select preset colors, add a hex code, define color on a color palate and save to My Colors for easy one-click access

Step 3: Swap out backgrounds

Change the entire vibe of your video by replacing backgrounds with images, videos, or designs of your choice.

how to easily swap a static background for a video mp4 background in Powtoon's library to enhance your business goals video

Step 4: Export your finished video

When you’re ready to export, watch one last preview to be sure you’ve got every detail correct. Then jump into the export flow.

You can publish directly to a Powtoon player page. Or, upload your video to your favorite social, content, or marketing platform. Advanced export options are available with a Powtoon premium plan

see the steps of a Powtoon export, from preview to setting your preferences to a finished business goals on its own Powtoon player page

Step 5: Share, distribute, & watch your vision for 2020 become a reality

Creating your video is only half the battle. You’ve got to get your video to your audience. This is an important step, but there is no hard and fast rule. It all depends on where your target audience is, and their preferences for consuming videos.

For maximum flexibility, opt for an MP4 download, and use that video file on any platform.
